Diablo Gaels vs Fresno (53-7) Head Coach Harry Batten's charges, played a stronger than expected preseason match against Fresno. Returning some of last season players from injury and new recruits the team, played a very solid fundamental match utilizing the mobile pack to move the ball and distributing the ball well in the back line. Adam Wells showed his skills at the fly half position switching from wing his normal position for this match. John Kunz at Half back and Mark Wibholm at #8 for this match played well and their leadership was evident in the confidence of the side. The entire side deserves mention Jamie, Jack, Berry, Jr.,Vaai., Dan Wilson, Mic, Alex, Sam, Tau, Checker, Dave, and Andrew Thelwell. While still not at full strength, this match was a very positive early season indicator. There were examples throughout the match of good attacking play execution and defensive positioning kept the Fresno side in check.

The
(Men in Black) U -23 squad of 30
young rugby players kicked off
the preseason with an impressive
group of Junior College aged
players from 4 different high
school area programs defeating
the visitors 12 trys to 1.
Returning Head Coach
Barry Thompson used Saturday's
match as an opportunity to
evaluate the experience level of
this years Under 23 player
pool. There were some very
eager players who put it on the
line with (Tri - Valley) players
Neil Woods and Rick Isabel have
a very impressive match along
with Jeff Kalemani, Jeff
Ma(Alameda) and Aron Chung
(Hayward). There are
approximately 10 players from
last years squad that have shown
maturity in the preseason
assessments. |
