About Diablo Gaels

The history of the Diablo Gaels Rugby Club (formerly Olde Gaels Athletic Club) was a result of the merger of two separate clubs known as Peacock Gap and Piedmont Rugby Clubs in 1971.  St. Mary's College Rugby Coach

Patrick Vincent, former Captain of the 1956 New Zealand All Blacks, suggested that his graduating seniors join the club. In so doing, the name Olde Gaels was selected as the college athletes joining the club were no longer young Gaels.

The club has competed in Northern California Rugby Football Union since 1971. We have competed continuously for the past 40 seasons in Northern California.  Diablo Gaels Rugby is now privileged to have players from from various Colleges and Universities throughout the United States as well as overseas. Our club has grown in both membership as well as depth in talent.

Our mission statement:

Our mission is to build on the local talent and hopefully create an Eagles nursery of our own rather than import players at playoff stages.  This prevents us from creating a false impression of what Norcal Rugby has to offer and also prevents stunting local talented players abilities to aspire to the next level.

This level being to represent the USA Eagles in the World Cup.

A message from Club President & Coach:

  • John Compaglia:-
The Diablo Gaels celebrated the club's 40th anniversary in 2011.  Our club's founder, Patrick Vincent, was known as an innovator and challenged his players to excel on and off the field.   As one of the most dynamic rugby club's in the San Francisco Bay Area, we look to challenge the league for the top spot in Northern California.  Our mix of both veteran / young talent and a competent, experienced coaching staff will be the basis for a winning combination.

  • Harry Batten:- It has been my great privilage to have been involved with the Diablo Gaels for many years.  It has allowed me to give back to this great game.  I have always believed that rugby should be the ultimate team sport and as such players of all abilities should be able to find an avenue to compete.  I have found that the Diablo Gaels has always emphasised this philosophy.  This is what drew me to the club and has kept me here all these years.  The Gaels are a very competitive club however, there is still a great emphasis on having fun. RUGBY IS NOT RUGBY WITHOUT AN ELEMENT OF FUN INVOLVED. We look forward to once again being a tough competitor in the league.

Pat Vincent

Pat Vincent had to wait until late in his career to represent New Zealand. He was chosen to play against the 1956 South African team (on tour here) in what was to be a highly significant series of matches.
